As we wrote in the video “Introduction to Prayer”, prayer is all about relationship with God in faith. And faith is a great and supernatural mystery, calling us each to “live from it in a vital and personal relationship with the living and true God. This relationship is prayer. ” (Catechism 2558) The Catholic Catechism further teaches:
2564 Christian prayer is a covenant relationship between God and man in Christ. It is the action of God and of man, springing forth from both the Holy Spirit and ourselves, wholly directed to the Father, in union with the human will of the Son of God made man.
Prayer, as in any relationship, is ordered to growth. We can grow in the life of prayer first of all by God’s grace – but secondly by our cooperation with His grace, and our participation in the way that prayer develops in the inner truth of prayer.
Prayer has revealed itself to us in stages, or grades of prayer. Catholic tradition has learned of these grades of prayer. A beginning of this understanding is presented in the videos below:
